Black Streaks on roofs
Airborne Roof-Killing Algae
The first thing about Gloeoapsa magma is that is it hard to say, now that we have shared the scientific name for this pest from now on we will call it Black Streaks becasue that is what it looks like. You have probably seen it (black streaks) on your neighbors' roofs, as well as your own, indicating that the bacteria can travel in search of a comfortable breeding ground. As it spreads, Black Streaks will eats away at the limestone filler in your shingles, causing damage looking dirty. First appearing on the north side of your roof, this algae spreads rapidly if not promptly addressed.

These algae (Gloeocapsa Magma) thrive in humid conditions like shingles and feed on the organic matter it contains. As the algae eat away at the limestone infill, they leave black streaks to protect themselves from the sun's rays. That's why you see those dark streaks.
